Do you know this feeling when you want to eat something but you just don’t know what exactly?
You tell your mom “I want to eat something delicious” and she starts to recite different options. You wrinkle your nose as you don’t like any of these, and then your eyes light up as you finally know what you want!

But your picture of ‘something delicious’ differs, doesn’t it?
It is the same when you say “I want a better website”
You can’t just go to some marketing specialist or a web developer and tell them, “I want a better website”. Your idea of ‘better’ is different from that of others. If you don’t give any specific guidelines, the developer will act on their own perception. The likelihood your perception won’t match theirs is about 99.9%, so don’t count on this 0.01%.
You should specify what exactly you want to avoid frustration. You can use different metrics, for example:
- More traffic
- Better conversion rate
- More photos (how many?)
- More project examples in your portfolio (how many?)
- Bigger contrast between the colors
- More CTAs (call to action) (how many), etc.
Depending on what exactly you want, you would need a different kind of specialist, especially if you won’t be the one making the changes. You may need a copywriter, a designer, a front end developer, or a back end developer.
Why is it important to know what exactly you want?
If you tell a designer you need a better website, they will work on the colors and the arrangement of the elements. It is possible that this designer’s style is more colorful and yours simpler.
If you approach a copywriter with the same phrase, they will try to improve your copy. You may like a fun and friendly style, but the copywriter you’ve contacted might be used to producing more formal, drier copy.
You are disappointed again.
I get it. It is easier to tell someone “Fix this” than to sit down on your own and think what should be changed. However, the results you want to achieve won’t be as good unless you take your time and think what exactly does your website need.
After all, you are the one who knows your audience best. You know your visitors’ interests, needs, and behavior, so you are the one who should take responsibility and decide how to improve the website.
Of course, you may ask someone experienced for an advice but then, when you go to the developer, be specific what you want. This will save you:
- Frustration for not getting what you have imagined
